Items in the Dark Cloud series are collectible objects stored in the player character's inventory. Items provide a major gameplay mechanic, and typically serve a purpose for either direct active use in combat, such as weapons, recovery and throwing items, powders, and amulets. They also serve a passive use in combat, primarily through improving weapons, with the use of attachments, crystals, gemstones, and coins. There are also those that only serve an aesthetic purpose, such as clothing.
Some items mainly serve a purpose outside of combat, such as fish, bait, and crafting materials. Lastly there are key items, which are required to progress through dungeons, and miscellaneous items. Miscellaneous items are those that generally do not fit in any other category, with the permanent type that cannot be sold or dropped also often called "quest items". Georama parts are also a type of item, but are exclusively used in the Georama gameplay mode, and thus do not appear in the inventory.
Items can be acquired through numerous ways, but most often they are bought in shops, found in treasure chests, dropped by slain enemies, or stolen from them through the Steal ability. Sometimes they are obtained through progressing the game's story, or as a gift or reward from a character.
Gameplay mechanics[]
Check-in counter[]
Unique to Dark Cloud is the check-in counter, a system of storing items with other shop owners. Items can be safely stored and kept out of your own inventory, and picked up at the available character's counter in each location at any time.
Checking in an item at a counter in the PlayStation 4 version will earn you the bronze trophy Hoarder.
Active item slot[]
Active item slots are a gameplay mechanic that allows a character to quickly use one of three chosen items while inside a dungeon in both Dark Cloud and Dark Chronicle. These are primarily used for the aforementioned powders, recovery, and throwing items, but are also the only way for amulets to take effect. There are other cases as well such as Dran's Feather, and the Camera, which allows you to use it in a dungeon. In the first game all character use the same slots, with the Revival Powder and Auto Repair Powder being used the most due to their instantaneous activation. In the second, Maximilian and Monica each have their own set of slots.
